Review: ‘Dexter’ Returns With A Vengeance

EPA/PAUL BUCKWith an all-new storyline, those that are familiar with the show will continue to embrace it while the newcomers will not feel left out.I was privileged enough to view the first four episodes of this coming season, and I can safely compare it to an airplane on the runway. It starts off a bit slow but gains speed quickly. By the time the fourth episode ended, I was left hanging and wanting more. Similar to last season, the first couple of episodes are devoted to building the plot and getting the audience familiar to the characters. They also spend some time in going over the relevant points of season one. Season two follows Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) in the aftermath of killing his own brother. Because of this, he has not been able to satisfy his urge to kill and becomes rusty at what he does best…murder. Things get even more complex for the Miami blood spatter analyst when his suspicious behavior causes his girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) to believe that he is a drug addict, which then results in his enrollment into a support group. The icing on the cake, and the reason I believe this season is going to be extraordinary, is after two divers discover over a dozen trash bags full of body parts (remnants of Dexter’s thirst for blood) in the ocean off the coast of Miami, the police devote their efforts to finding, who they call, the ‘Bay Harbor Butcher’. Little do they know the anonymous ‘Bay Harbor Butcher’ is on their very own forensics team. What makes this interesting is that it leads up to the scenario that Dexter will have to work on solving the crimes that he has committed. Season two seems very promising as it has all of the elements that made season one great. The ironic storyline, surrounded by great acting and dark humor, makes this an absolute pleasure to watch. If you enjoyed season one, then clear your calendar for Sunday nights because you won’t be disappointed.
